Ninja Tune continues their Mr. Scruff reissue campaign with 2008’s cannily titled Ninja Tuna LP. Striking a delicate balance between highbrow, studious musicianship and (somewhat) sophomoric humour, Scruff was and remains a vital figure in a UK dance orbit that could stand to take a jab or two. The tunes nevertheless speak for themselves: check the head-banging boom-bap meets jazz of ‘Music Takes Me Up’ or the raved up dubby sway of ‘Nice Up The Function’ for proof of purpose.
