Experimental group Emperor's New Clothes (or ENC for short), though maybe underlooked in their 90s heyday, have broken through and reached a new audience in relative absence. Their intoxicating blend of free jazz, post-punk, dub, noise, and electronics perplexed many at the time, including their record label who shelved the group’s third LP due to its supposedly uncommercial and antagonistic sound. Recorded and produced by DJ, producer and graphic designer Trevor 'Underdog' Jackson.

Recently the power of internet music fandom has coaxed Luke Hannam and co. into giving Surreal State a proper release on their newly minted eponymous imprint, and there’s gold to be heard in these twisted and abstract yet oddly beautiful grooves. Recorded by themselves largely in a Lincolnshire chapel, tracks like ‘Strange Charm’ and ‘Gamelan Melodica’ maintain the hushed magic of something sacred for all their unrelenting noise.
