Marie Davidson is an expert in scathing wit, and with her latest single she exercises it to its peak. ‘Y.A.A.M.’ marks her “retour au dancefloor” from the subversive pop and rock centred Renegade Breakdown of 2020, landing her deadpan yet playful lyricism and ultra hardcore electro on Soulwax’s DEEWEE imprint. Swarms of jagged synths and a stomping four to the floor descend on any unlucky to stand in Davidson’s way, with the Soulwax version spreading out those woodpecking industrial clangs and bass bursts, while adding heavy drum artillery and an occasional breakbeat to the tension filled dancefloor groove.
