Junior Boys – So This is Goodbye (Domino) |
| |
After 2004’s underground smash “Last Exit” and the departure of Johnny Dark from the band (who released a solo EP on Kin recently) Junior Boys are back with their follow up which has been greeted with feverish acclaim all over the place. The beats are stripped back and simplified (revealing Dark to be the rhythmical powerhouse of the original lineup) but the song writing and sheer wide appeal of their music has been upped several notches. An album that harks back to classic heartstring-tugging electropop but with a fresh, modern edge. Totally recommended.

The Veils – Nux Vomica (Rough Trade) |
| |
"The Veils' 2002 debut album was founded on fey romance and misery, but this
is a heady blast of gothic psychodrama. Here, mainman Finn Andrews has
reincarnated himself as a hellfire preacher who has embraced atheism. What's
more, his new band mates empathise with his musical vision, especially Liam
Gerrard whose spooky organ groan anchors Andrews's stinging barks on the
likes of 'Jesus for the Jugular'. There are lugubrious shades of Tom Waits
and antipodean gothfather Nick Cave here, but Nux Vomica has its own type of
elegant, seductive power. 4 Stars." The Observer |

After releases on Warp and Arcola, midlands beatmonger Milanese has a new home at Planet Mu. Probably his best material yet, this album reinforces Milanese’s growing reputation and proves beyond doubt that Planet Mu is home to some of the most exciting dancefloor productions coming out of the UK at the moment.

Neil Landstrumm – Harlem Wake Up (Planet Mu) |
| |
After his bleepy rework of Happy Mondays/Joy Division, techno legend Landstrumm releases this slice of early 90’s ravestep on Planet Mu. ‘Kids Wake Up’ is SL2-meets-LFO, with cut and paste scratches, sped up loops, sirens, testone-style bleeps and massive bass. ‘Harlem Shoot Me’ combines all of the above with a dubstep tempo. Just get it.
