Bleep 2004 Rewind

Christmas 2004

Welcome to the first dedicated Bleep mailout, a roundup of the best of the music that has gone up on the site over this year. Bleep was launched back in January with the entire Warp catalogue as high quality mp3 DRM-free download and caused a big buzz - over the year the market has developed a lot and downloads have gone from something viewed with deep suspicion to the direction that the majority are headed in. Big ups to all the labels who saw the potential of Bleep early on and got their music available on the site - there are now 45 or so labels in the Bleep family, with the majority of them still only available through us. Next year will see big improvements and changes on the site, with a greatly increased catalogue and choices, and some nifty new features for the user. And now: to the music. Enjoy listening and browsing, happy new year, Bleep xx.

Christmas Compilation

Various Artists Christmas Stocking Filler Pt. 2 (Twisted Nerve)

Ok so this is from a couple of years back, but this is still a perfect seasonal compilation from Twisted Nerve, featuring Andy Votel, Mum&Dad, Badly Drawn Boy and all your favourites.

  Electronics, House, Techno

Doctor Rockit The Unnecessary History Of Doctor Rockit (Accidental)

Must-have collection of Matthew Herberts material as Dr Rockit spanning 1996-2003, including tracks from the Clear label

Brooks Red Tape (Soundslike)

One of the albums of 2004, house music stripped down and reconfigured into new places.

The Soft Pink Truth Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want...? (Soundslike)

Drew from Matmos does slamming electronic death camp covers of hardcore and punk classics, hold on to your chaps.

Lab Rat XL (Drexciya) Mice or Cyborg (Clone)

The final ‘storm’ unleashed by James Stinson/Drexciya, some of his toughest and best material from a career defined by greatness.

Secret Frequency Crew Forest Of The Echo Downs (schematic)

Superb accessible album on Schematic, hard to describe well, just listen to it.

Mr 76ix Hits of 76ix (skam)

Skam's new secret Weapon - fat electronic sounds, drum patterns and textures put through the mangler. Recommended.

Mouse on Mars Radical Connector (Sonig)

Read a Review Here

Fennesz Endless Summer (Mego)

Old but gold, reissued in 2004. This total classic from '02 evokes the spirits of Brian Wilson & My Bloody Valentine and drenches them in electronic textures.

Slam Year Zero (Soma)

New album from the Scottish techno/house veterans, featuring vocals from Dot Allison, envoy, Tyrone and more.

Chateau Flight Les Antipodes (versatile)

Chateau Flight (I:Cube and Gilb'r) get remixed - Bertrand Burgalat's Doors-esque organ workout is very French and very cool, while Malik bleeps it up.

Basslines / Acid / Drums

Wagon Christ Sorry I Make You Lush (Ninjatune)

Luke Vibert was back with another superb Wagon Christ album. Big fun happy grinny music.

Super_collider Radianatians On The Rise (Rise Robots Rise)

Jamie Lidell and Cristian Vogel's new EP, featuring Wagon Christ again on the remix.

Spektrum Enter The Spektrum (Playhouse)

Jump-up, new wave, tight electro, irresistible.

!!! Louden Up Now

Chkchkchk had their best year yet, this was the album. One of the best all-out party albums ever.

Black Strobe Chemical Sweet Girl E.P (Output)

One of the breakthrough artists of 2004 - effortless Parisian acid and electro that the English cannot ignore.. For More Output see the Channel3 compilation.

James Cotton The Dancing Box (spectral)

Totally brilliant. Polygon Window, Adonis, early 808 State all put through the James Cotton (aka dabrye/tadd mullinix) sound-mangler and sounding like nothing else on earth.

Bleep Exclusives & Download Only Singles

Roots Manuva Double Drat
(Big Dada)

Franz Ferdinand This Fffire (Domino)

Squarepusher Squarewindow (Warp)

LFO VS !!! Me& Giuliani.. A Remix (warp)

Icy Electronic Pop Beauty

Bjork Medúlla (One Little Indian)

Experimental, awe-inspiring and as stunning as ever; Mark Bell back in effect at the controls and a roll call of interesting contributors.

Nouvelle Vague Nouvelle Vague (Peacefrog)

Languid, French female vocal Bossa covers of English new wave and synthpop classics (The Cure, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, PIL etc). Sounds irritating and gimmicky? Its not, its perfect. Their version of Teenage Kicks is what Peely is listening to in heaven.

Junior Boys Last Exit (Electrokin)

Much hyped, and very good - definitely an essential album of 2004. Tricksy Timbaland-y beats meet New Order/Depeche Mode vocal emotion and style.

Lali Puna Faking the Books (Morr)

Probably their best yet - dreamy, fuzzy instrumentation, vintage synths and vocals .

Domino - label of 2004?

Adem Homesongs
Stunning solo work from one-time member of Fridge.

Clinic Winchester Cathedral

Sons And Daughters Love The Cup
Rockabilly-fuelled Glaswegian band. One of 04's best.

Juana Molina Segundo
A delicate mix of traditional latin folk and electronica.

  Hip Hop, Folk, Beats

Beans Shock City Maverick (Warp)

His best solo work to date, futuristic hip hop beamed directly into your brain. Jedi Knight/Reload man Mark Pritchard contributes production.

CLOUDDEAD Ten (Big Dada)

Last release from cLOUDDEAD (now concentrating on the Subtle project on Lex records). They also released the Dead Dogs Two single with a spine tingly remix by Boards Of Canada.

Boom Bip Corymb (Lex)

More Boards remix action, plus four Tet, Mogwai, and more on this compendium of assorted Boom Bip tracks.

Subtle F.K.O. (Lex)

Superb single, Doseone at his vocal best.

Blockhead Music By Cavelight (Ninjatune)

A nocturnal treasure that sits well alongside the best of DJ Shadow and Krush, but more psychedelic and attention-grabbing.

Sixtoo The Psyche Years. 1996 - 2002 (Vertical Form)

Tripped-out 21 track roundup of Sixtoo's work for various labels, plus early demos and more.

RJD2 Since We Last Spoke (Def Jux)

  Mentalrave

Brothomstates Rktik (Arcola)

A monster main room techno/house record that sounds best over an enormous system in a big arena.

Mr. Oizo Stunt (F Com)

'Flat Beat' with an extra squirt of Amyl.

Alter Ego Rocker (Klang Electronik)

The euro-electro-trash DJ's favourite of 04, played about 1 billion times at Sonar. Coming to an office party near you now.

Eight Frozen Modules DJ, Riddim & Source E.P. (Planet Mu)

Woah. Whats this? Seriously good digital ragga.
